There is perhaps no other area of the law where it is more important to retain experienced attorneys than in adoption law. We recognize that in every adoption case, the fundamental welfare of a family is at stake, and the need to protect and sustain the integrity of family relationships is paramount to us.
Whether your case pertains to the adoption of a related or unrelated child, an international adoption in the United States, an agency placement, or the adoption of an adult, the stakes are high and the emotions can be overwhelming. Just as every family is unique, we understand that each adoption case is as different as it is special. Thus, each adoption matter handled by our firm is treated with individual respect, attention, and dignity.
Kuhn, Mitchell, Moss, Mork & Lechowicz is proud to represent adopting parents, biological parents, and family members in the following types of adoption cases:
- Related Adoptions: The most common adoption matter is a related adoption. In this circumstance, persons related by blood to a minor child seek to adopt the child as their own. Whether one or both of the child's biological parents are deceased, or unable to care for their child, we treat each case of this nature with sensitivity toward the restructuring of your family.
- International Adoptions: Whether you adopted a child in a foreign country or were granted custody of a child in a foreign country, a process called a "re-adoption" is required to be commenced within 30 days of the child's entry into the State of Illinois. Our attorneys are well versed in foreign adoption matters, and are familiar with the laws of numerous jurisdictions, including, but not limited to, China, Guatemala, and European nations.
- Private Adoptions and Agency Placements: Whether you are adopting a child from a non-related family, or if you have made the difficult choice of placing your child for adoption, we understand that this is an emotional experience that deserves our attention and respect. We successfully manage all aspects of private adoption cases in any stage, whether the child is not yet born or if the child has been placed with an agency. In cases where the adopting parents and the biological parents choose to meet one another and interact prior to the birth of the child, we are skilled in helping all individuals remain comfortable with the process. In instances where the biological parents and the adopting parents prefer not to meet, we have successfully acted as liaisons in the process.*
- Adult Adoptions: In many instances, families make the choice to adopt an adult relative or close friend, and we have successfully completed many of these adoptions, some with only one court appearance.

There is no one plan that can be applied to an adoption. Our firm will take a look at the circumstances surrounding your family in order to come up with a plan tailored to your needs. * Private adoptions are never certain to be granted unless and until biological parents have properly consented and the time periods required by law have passed. Kuhn, Mitchell, Moss, Mork & Lechowicz has successfully worked with both sides in private adoption cases, but can only represent either the adopting parents or the biological parents, and cannot represent both.
